What did you do this past week?

This past week my group and I began working on phase 1 of the class project. We met together a couple days ago for the first time and decided on a topic that we thought could be useful but also manageable. At first we thought doing a website that helped people in food deserts find healthy food near them would be a good idea, but we quickly realized that the government APIs would be a big pain to work with and that it would be more work than we realized. We brainstormed some more and decided to work on a website that helps people in their quest to get fit by showing them exercises, places to workout near them, and equipment that they might want to buy. While most of the team worked to get AWS deployed I began working on some of the pages and have so far completed the home page and about page.

2. What’s in your way?

I’m interviewing for internships right now and the preparation for those can take up a lot of my time.

3. What will you do next week?

Next week I’ll begin integrating the pages that I’ve completed with the main repo that the team is working on. I’ll then start working on making the pages for the different models and any other additional pages/frontend work that are needed.

4. If you read it, what did you think of the Single Responsibility Principle?

I thought that it was a very well written chapter that concisely explains the principle in a quite simple manner. I thought the examples provided really helped to understand what the author was trying to explain.

5. What was your experience of types? (this question will vary, week to week)

I think Professor Downing gave a great explanation of types and how useful they can be for storing different types of data.

6. What was your experience of IDB1 and reduce? (this question will vary, week to week)

IDB1 has been going well so far as I think my group and I are making good progress and have chosen a good topic. I thought reduce was pretty straight forward and well explained by Professor Downing.

7. How did you fare in the storm?

I got quite lucky as my house in Houston never lost water and only lost power for about an hour.

8. What made you happy this week?

Finally having warmth after that hellishly cold last week was a welcome change.

9. What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

A great article discussing the implications of automation and what the future workforce might look like.
